Our Story

Like many great stories, ours began almost by accident. Back in 1956, Ray Harty and his family were among the first to settle in the initial phase of Hoffman Estates. “Parcel A” Ray and his wife, Mary, both grew up on the Westside of Chicago had decided to raise their five children in the country.

At this time, Ray was a troubleshooter for Illinois Bell Telephone. Ray was skilled in many areas and also happened to be a stand up neighbor, always willing to lend a hand when it was needed. One cold winter night, Ray’s next door neighbor called him over to help with a big problem. The family’s heat had gone out and it was frightfully cold.

Ray sprang into action. He gathered a few things and headed next door to see if he could help. As it turned out, he could. The heater stopped working due to a burned out motor. Luckily for the neighbor, Ray just happened to have an extra one on hand.

While the neighbors enjoyed a toasty warm house that night, Ray was just pleased to have been able to help out a friend. The wheels, however, started turning. It occurred to Ray that as remote as Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg were he could make money helping people out.

For a couple of years, Ray worked out of his family car. As the area grew, Ray had to keep up with demand and decided it was time to hire a few helpers. Ray’s business had grown so successful that after 22 years with Illinois Bell Telephone he retired and poured all of his energy into helping his neighbors enjoy comfort in their own homes.

Ray didn’t achieve success on his own, however. He was fortunate to have his supportive wife, Mary, always by his side. Mary worked many hours behind the scenes while raising the couple’s five children. Two of Ray’s sons, William and Paul, followed in their father’s footsteps, joining the ever-growing heating and air conditioning business in the 1970s.

Ray passed away in August 1990, leaving a loving family and a strong work ethic behind. Ever since, the Ray Harty Family has proudly continued and improved on an already great business. Ray’s is not only one of the first companies in the area, it is now one of the oldest, celebrating more than 50 years in the industry.

With a great reputation preceding it, it’s no wonder there have been others that picked up on the Ray’s name. This has been confusing for a lot of customers, but it’s easy to make sure you’re dealing with the best. Just insist on working with The “Original” Ray’s HVAC.
