Elgin is a mid-sized city in the Chicagoland area of Illinois. It sits just west of Chicago along Interstate 90. The city stretches across both Kane and Cook counties. Its motto is “the city in the suburbs.”
Elgin was originally established as a place to build a bridge across the Fox River for the stagecoach route from Chicago to Galena. The city was founded in 1835 and formally incorporated in 1854. Elgin was named for a Scottish hymn of the same name. Its early economy was driven by dairy production for the Chicago metropolitan area. Elgin later became known as “Watch City” when the Elgin Watch Factory was established and became one of the largest producers of fine watches.
