Elgin is a mid-sized city in the Chicagoland area of Illinois. It sits just west of Chicago along Interstate 90. The city stretches across both Kane and Cook counties. Its motto is “the city in the suburbs.”

History

Elgin was originally established as a place to build a bridge across the Fox River for the stagecoach route from Chicago to Galena. The city was founded in 1835 and formally incorporated in 1854. Elgin was named for a Scottish hymn of the same name. Its early economy was driven by dairy production for the Chicago metropolitan area. Elgin later became known as “Watch City” when the Elgin Watch Factory was established and became one of the largest producers of fine watches.

    • The Gail Borden Library is the third largest library in Illinois. Its huge book collection, landmark building, and regular events draw both local and out of town visitors.
    • The Illinois Railway Museum is located just west of Elgin in Union. It has railcars dating back to the era of steam engines.
    • Lords Park is a 100-acre park that was established in 1892. It features the Lords Park Pavilion, Lords Park Zoo, and Lords Park Aquatic Center.
    • Grand Victoria Casino is a riverboat casino docked on the Fox River. It features more than 1,100 slot machines and other Las Vegas-style games.

The median value of a home is about $191,000, and the homeownership rate is just under 71 percent. About 87 percent of households have lived in the same home for one year or longer.

Elgin has a moderate climate, but sees somewhat extreme temperatures in both summer and winter. The average July high is 84 degrees with occasional heat waves bringing higher temperatures. The average January low is just 14 degrees, and the average January high is only 30 degrees. There are about 30 inches of snow each year. The average annual rainfall is 37 inches, and most rain occurs during late spring and early summer.
