Palatine History

The westward migration of the early 1800s brought the first settlers to Palatine, pioneers who followed established Native American trails to explore the region’s prairies, forests and wetlands. Founded in 1866, the Village of Palatine grew up around a railroad station that linked the town to Chicago and beyond. The first engines that ran on the current railroad came from England, and the track for them was built accordingly. It holds the distinction of being the only left-handed railroad in the country. A visit to the George. H. Clayson House Museum offers a glimpse of what life was like in Palatine during the late 19th century. Housed in a structure built in 1873, the museum holds more than 1,000 artifacts from the village’s early history.

From 1914 to 1931, Palatine played host to the Cook County Fair, and the town’s first subdivision was developed on the former fairgrounds. Suburbs started to spring up in Palatine after World War II, and the town continued to experience growth throughout the 20th century. The city began revitalizing its downtown area in 1999, adding a new passenger train station, several commercial buildings and multiple condominium complexes.

Nearly 70,000 people reside in Palatine, according to the U.S. Census. Around 33 percent of the households are families with children under the age of 18, and around 28 percent of households are made up of people living alone. The median age in Palatine is about 36.8 years.

Palatine boasts a school system that has won numerous awards, including the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award presented by President George W. Bush in 2003. Palatine has a community college, two high schools, two junior high schools and several elementary schools. Nearly half of the town’s adult inhabitants hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. Both the Community Consolidated School District 15 and the Township High School District 211 are headquartered in Palatine. With more than 4,000 employees, the school districts are also the city’s biggest employers.

The Palatine Park District oversees the operation of dozens of parks, many of which offer facilities like athletic fields, basketball courts, tennis courts and swimming pools. The 1,800-acre Deer Grove area, a nature preserve situated on rolling hills covered with forests and wetlands, has miles of trails that outdoor enthusiasts can explore on foot, mountain bike, horseback and skis.

Palatine plays host to many community events throughout the year, including a Fourth of July celebration, an end-of-summer Streetfest and a spring-to-fall Farmers Market. The 18-hole Palatine Hills Golf Course offers play for golfers of all skill levels while the Theatre Nebula gives high school and college students the opportunity to showcase their acting talents.
