Schaumburg, IL

History

Once a fertile hunting and farming ground for members of the Kickapoo tribe and other Native American bands, Schaumburg was first settled by European farmers during the early 19th century. Most of the first settlers came directly from Germany, and the area remained largely German until the early 20th century. As the nearby city of Chicago grew, Schaumburg developed into an important market town and produced a prosperous class of corn and soybean farmers. During the 1960s, rapid suburbanization in nearby Hoffman Estates caused local land prices to rise and encouraged residential development. Today, Schaumburg is a bustling suburban city with a rapidly growing population.

Geography

Schaumburg is located about 30 miles northeast of Chicago. Like many other communities in northeastern Illinois, it’s a major business center as well as a bedroom community for Chicago. As such, it boasts a range of medium-density residential and commercial neighborhoods. Outside of the developed areas, a few patches of farmland and woodland remain. Several nearby preserves contain well-kept examples of the region’s signature oak savannas. Major transportation thoroughfares near Schaumburg include Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 20 and Illinois Highway 53.

Population and Demographics

Although Schaumburg is technically incorporated as a “village,” it’s one of the largest municipalities in the Chicagoland area. According to the most recent Census count, its population sits just below 75,000 and continues to grow at a brisk pace. Thanks to the presence of several major employers in the neighboring communities, Schaumburg has a high density of white-collar professionals such as lawyers, executives, accountants and medical experts. A handful of manufacturing firms support a robust population of blue-collar families, as well. Schaumburg’s schools are regarded as some of the best in Cook County.
